Riding a motorcycle is a skill. As with any other skill, the only way to get better at it is to practice.
When you are first starting out on your motorcycle, it is a good idea to stay in safe areas in Indiana away from heavy traffic to practice your techniques and learn how your bike handles. However, eventually, you will have to venture out on the open road.
No matter how much you have practiced, you may come across hazardous situations for which you feel ill-prepared. If you do not handle them appropriately, these conditions could contribute to a motorcycle accident. The following motorcycle safety tips pertain to common scenarios that you may encounter on the road.
1. Observe asphalt conditions
Keep watch for anything that could cause your tires to slip or skid. Examples include sand, gravel or spilled fuel.
2. Remain prepared to brake
On a motorcycle, you have two ways to brake: a foot pedal and a finger lever. You should cover both at all times so that you can slow down and stop at a moment’s notice.
3. Maintain a low gear
While it is important to be ready to stop at any time, braking may not be your only alternative to avoid a collision. You may also have the option of leaping ahead if you stay in a lower gear. This also allows you to alert drivers to your presence by revving the engine.
4. Use your mirrors wisely
Even properly adjusted mirrors only tell part of the story. Get into the habit of glancing over your shoulder to check your blind spot in addition to scanning your rearview mirrors.
5. Make yourself visible
Drivers often have difficulty seeing motorcyclists, but there are ways that you can improve your visibility to others on the road. Choose riding gear, particularly jackets and helmets, in fluorescent yellow or other bright colors. Even from a distance, this makes it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see you.
Accidents are not uncommon for beginning drivers. However, employing these strategies can help you avoid them.
